Queer Nightlife Collective Manifesto
We believe queer nightlife should be a place where people can celebrate, express themselves, build community and belong.
Our spaces exist because of our communities.
We recognise that creating safer spaces is a shared responsibility, and we are committed to working together to strengthen the care, accountability and support available across queer nightlife in London.
By signing this manifesto, we commit to these shared principles.
As members of this collective, we believe in:
-
Community Care
We will put the wellbeing of our communities at the heart of our decisions and foster spaces built on care, respect and solidarity.
-
Inclusion
We recognise that some events intentionally centre specific communities in response to historic and ongoing marginalisation. We will respect the purpose of these spaces while challenging discrimination and harassment and supporting dignity, safety and belonging. Inclusion also means understanding whose voices, cultures and experiences have been excluded, and addressing who is employed, paid, booked, represented in leadership and able to shape our events.
-
Consent
We believe consent is fundamental. We will promote clear, freely given and ongoing consent, respect boundaries and recognise that consent can be withdrawn at any time. Consent must never be assumed. We recognise that alcohol and other drugs can affect a person’s capacity to consent. Everyone has the right to be in control of their own body and experience.
-
Harm Reduction
We are committed to evidence-based, compassionate approaches that prioritise health, information and welfare over judgement or punishment. We will also support sober people and create spaces where they can participate or feel that they belong.
-
Accountability
When harm occurs, we will take concerns seriously and respond thoughtfully, fairly and consistently. Accountability should prioritise community safety, fairness, transparency and proportionality. Where appropriate and safe, we will support restorative approaches that allow learning, repair and behavioural change, without pressuring those harmed to participate.
-
Collaboration
We believe we are stronger when we work together. We will share learning, resources and best practice to improve safety across queer nightlife.
-
Continuous Improvement
We acknowledge that no organisation gets everything right. Creating safer spaces means reducing risk, responding meaningfully when harm happens, listening and continually improving our practices.
-
Cultural Responsibility and Representation
We will acknowledge the histories, roots and communities that have shaped queer nightlife, including the contributions of people of colour and trans communities. We will challenge cultural appropriation, tokenism and the dilution of cultural expression, and support meaningful representation, credit and influence for the communities whose cultures our events draw on.
As members of this collective, we commit to:
-
Put community safety first
Create environments where people feel respected, supported and able to enjoy queer nightlife free from harassment, discrimination and violence.
-
Work together
Support one another, share knowledge and collaborate to strengthen community safety across queer nightlife.
-
Develop shared safeguarding standards
Work together to create and maintain safeguarding policies, procedures and guidance that can be adopted across participating events.
-
Promote consent and respectful behaviour
Create cultures where consent, boundaries and mutual respect are understood, promoted and upheld.
-
Respond to harm with care
Take reports seriously, respond compassionately and ensure safeguarding concerns are addressed in a thoughtful, consistent and trauma-informed way.
-
Listen to our communities
Seek feedback from attendees, artists, staff and volunteers, and use that learning to improve our events and our collective practice.
-
Invest in learning
Encourage safeguarding, welfare and community safety training, and share knowledge and best practice across the collective.
-
Be transparent
Be open about our values, expectations and community standards, and communicate clearly how concerns can be raised and addressed.
-
Respect privacy
Handle personal information responsibly, proportionately and lawfully, recognising the importance of confidentiality and data protection.
-
Make fair decisions
Aim to make decisions that are evidence-informed, consistent and free from bias, recognising the impact those decisions can have on individuals and communities.
-
Recognise intersectionality
Work to ensure our events are welcoming for people of all backgrounds and identities, recognising that experiences of harm are shaped by intersecting forms of discrimination.
-
Share responsibility
Recognise that community safety is not solely the responsibility of security or welfare teams. Organisers, venues, artists, volunteers, contractors and attendees all have a role to play in creating safer spaces.
-
Keep improving
Review our practices regularly, learn from experience and remain open to change as our communities and understanding evolve.
-
Our Vision
This manifesto is the foundation of our collective.
We believe queer nightlife should continue to be a place of freedom, creativity, connection and resistance.
Through collaboration, transparency and shared responsibility, we aim to build a culture where community safety is central to everything we do.
